‘Wicked’ Review

Wicked is an epic musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights) from a screenplay written by Winnie Holzman (Roadies) and Dana Fox (The Lost City), with songs by Stephen Schwartz (The Prince of Egypt). Featuring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande-Butera, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum; it is the first of a two-part adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Set in the Land of Oz, the story follows Elphaba Thropp, a green-skinned woman with magical abilities who eventually becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
