Marvel Studios is a big fan of trilogies! Every major hero outside of Hulk, Hawkeye, and Black Widow has a trilogy of movies – Thor currently has four movies and the fourth Captain America film hits theaters next February! Characters well on their way to joining this club include Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. It might be more of a long shot now for the latter since The Marvels became the lowest-grossing MCU film of all time. There are many factors to blame for this. The movie wasn’t good, the two co-leads, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, only previously appeared in Disney+ shows, the new villain was dreadfully bad, Jude Law’s character was nowhere to be seen, and did I mention the movie just wasn’t good. That being said, Marvel Studios is a miraculous machine and one stumble shouldn’t stop them from moving forward with a proper send-off for one of, if not the strongest of the Avengers.

The best route forward for a third Captain Marvel film is to adapt a comic storyline that encompasses a lot of characters typically featured in an Avengers film. This was done before with Captain America: Civil War, which was basically an Avengers movie under the Captain America banner. With Marvel Studios eagerly attempting to start introducing mutants to the MCU and Deadpool & Wolverine shattering box office records it is clear that fans still have love for 20th Century Fox’s band of mutant heroes. As bad as The Marvels was, it’s ending sets up the perfect story for a third film.

Avengers vs X-Men is a recent major comic event that fans have been clamoring to see get adapted to the big screen. The story involves the return of the Phoenix Force and the subsequent war between the Avengers and the X-Men. This would be great idea for a movie, the only issue however, is that there are no Mutants on Earth-616 in the MCU currently – Ms. Marvel, Namor, Mister Immortal, and El Águila notwithstanding. This means that for an Avengers vs X-Men movie to happen, multiversal travel would have to occur. This is where the Captain Marvel fits in. Slight spoilers for the end of The Marvels, the final scene of that feature saw Monica Rambeau trapped in another universe after closing a breach. She wakes up in a hospital bed to see a variant of her mother, Maria Rambeau, sitting next to her. Soon after Beast walks in and refers to this Maria variant as Binary and mentions Charles Xavier leaving Monica perplexed at her situation. Fans of the X-Men would know that Monica is at the X-Mansion in an unknown universe.
A third film could find Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan finding a way to travel to said universe to save Monica and bring her home. While doing so the team gets mixed up in whatever spat the X-Men is having with their universe’s Avengers. Replace Avengers with Marvels in the title and viola, you have a potential banger of a trilogy closer. This simple premise would allow Marvel Studios to redeem the Captain Marvel series and bring back familiar faces such as Anna Paquin, Famke Jansen, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Elliot Page, and Shawn Ashmore for a last hurrah. Heck, this would even give Channing Tatum another opportunity to play Remy LeBeau/Gambit. As for who would play the Avengers, they could pick anyone given that it’s an alternate universe. Maybe reach out to Tom Cruise to play the Superior Iron Man for a big surprise cameo!

Now would a Marvels vs X-men movie be guaranteed to make a billion dollars? The correct answer is no as nothing is ever guaranteed at the box office, but it does have a better chance to reach the illustrious coveted milestone than if there were no X-Men involved. Captain Marvel is not the best MCU film, but it made over a billion at the box office partially because it was released in between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Fans didn’t want to miss out on any relevant information this movie may have brought up for the story so they came out to see it. They should do the same thing for this film, releasing it between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. That would make the most since for this film to become a financial success.
Will Marvel do this? Only Kevin Feige truly knows what their plans for the character are. Hopefully, he reads this article and puts the film into pre-production asap as I think this is a great idea! If not, maybe we can see a different ending for Captain Marvel after the Multiverse Saga wraps up.
