NetherRealm Studios is a video game developer popular for the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises. They don’t have any other fighting games to their name besides a few small titles for mobile devices. For the past few years, NetherRealm Studios has been interchanging the Mortal Kombat and Injustice games. We got Mortal Kombat in 2011, Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, Mortal Kombat X in 2015, Injustice 2 in 2017, and most recently Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. It seems that now Ed Boone has gone online to ask the fans of both series what game they would want to see next. Logic would say Injustice 3 is next, but we here at Flixfrog believe that it is time for a break from both Mortal Kombat and Injustice. It’s time for NetherRealm Studios to give us an entirely new fighting game. Since the 2011 reboot, Mortal Kombat has begun to include guest characters into their rosters. The most notable inclusions have been characters from popular horror franchises such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Predator, the Xenomorph, Leatherface, and The Terminator.
At this point, NetherRealm Studios should take it a step further and make a fighting game with a roster solely filled with these horror icons. The gameplay doesn’t have to be much different from Mortal Kombat or Injustice and would fit the reputation the studio has for violence, blood, and gore in video games. So what would you name such a game? Well, one of the most famous fighting games in the 2000s was the Fight Night franchise and one of the most popular horror films from the 80s was Fright Night. (The 2011 remake was pretty good too!) Assuming everybody likes puns as much as we do and considering the content of this potential game franchise, Fright Night Vol. 1 would be a fitting title.
The real question is, can a studio such as NetherRealm make such a game? The firm answer is, maybe. The hardest part of putting a game like this together is licensing all of the horror characters as their rights are owned by multiple film studios. While many of the characters do come from the same studios, there are a few outliers that would make it more difficult. That is if you want a large and diverse roster of characters. So, the next question is, what characters would you include in this game? Well, we have already taken time to put together a roster that seems fitting for the first game in a franchise such as this. The fighters are listed below.
Base Roster | |
• Michael Myers – Halloween • Jason – Friday the 13th • Candyman – Candyman • Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare on Elm Street • The Creeper – Jeepers Creepers • Leprechaun – Leprechaun • Leatherface – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre • Xenomorph – Alien • Predator – Predator • Pennywise – It • Isaac – Children of the Corn | • Pinhead – Hellraiser • Terminator (T—800) – Terminator • Terminator (T—1000) – Terminator • Sam – Trick ‘r Treat • Betelgeuse – Beetlejuice • Jojo – Killer Klowns from Outer Space • Ghostface – Scream • Chucky – Child’s Play • The Miner – My Bloody Valentine • Ash – The Evil Dead •The Fisherman – I Know What You Did Last Summer |
Lastly, what systems should this game release on? It would make sense to release the game on as many platforms as possible to increase awareness and sales. Therefore, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Steam are good candidates. Now we know it is a pipe dream that a game like this would ever be made, but wouldn’t it be great to see what it could look like? Well, go no further as we have created a mock-up trailer and placed it below. The more you like and share this article the higher the probability someone at NetherRealm Studios like Ed Boon or John Tobias will read it and decide to make that game.
