Eight Potential Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits

So far all of the Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits we have seen in One Piece; the Yamata no Orochi, Kyuubi no Kitsune, Daibutsu, and Seiryu have all been based off of Eastern mythical creatures. The only exception being the Phoenix, although the design of the phoenix form taken by Marco (with its long slender neck, flaming head crest, and lengthy tail feathers) is somewhat more in line with traditional depictions of the Fenghuang in Chinese mythology or the Japanese Hō-ō. This leads me to believe that at this point Oda will not venture into mythical creatures from Western cultures. This still leaves many more Eastern mythical creatures to choose from. Below is a list of the eight potential mythical Zoan Devil Fruits that have the best chance to appear before One Piece ends its run.

Saru Saru no Mi,

Model: Son Goku

(Monkey-Monkey Fruit, Model: Monkey King)

The Japanese name for Sun Wukong, a major character of the 16th century novel Journey to the West, Son Goku is described as a supernatural monkey born from a strong magic stone. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full Sun Wukong or Sun Wukong hybrid at will. The user would gain access to many abilities including; immense strength, increased speed, flight, weather manipulation, size manipulation, self duplication, and enlightenment. The user would also gain the ability to transform into 72 different objects including various weapons, animals, and other inanimate things.

Buta Buta no Mi,

Model: Cho Hakkai

(Boar-Boar Fruit, Model: Eight Precepts Pig)

The Japanese name for Zhu Bajie, a major character of the 16th century novel Journey to the West, Cho Hakkai is described as a terrible monster that is part human and part pig. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full Zhu Bajie or Zhu Bajie hybrid at will. The user gains powerful tusks and animalistic strength which would only increase as long as the user adheres to the eight precepts. The user would gain enlightenment in the form of the lasting realization of the nature of existence as well as flight and the ability to transform into 36 rough or large things, like a boulder or a tree. This could potentially be the Devil Fruit of Vice Admiral Chaton due to his alias meaning brown pig and his lusting after women.

Tori Tori no Mi,

Model: Suzaku

(Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Vermillion Bird)

The Vermilion Bird is a celestial pheasant and one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. Its home is in the Southern sky. Suzaku is described as a red bird with a five-colored plumage and is perpetually covered in flames. It is often mistaken for the Fenghuang due to similarities in appearance, but the main difference being that it’s flames can burn. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full Suzaku or Suzaku hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, flight, and the ability to create and manipulate fire.

Kumo Kumo no Mi,

Model: Gyūki

(Spider-Spider Fruit, Model: Ox Demon)

The gyūki is a yōkai from the folklore of western Japan. The gyūki usually has an ox’s head with sharp upward-curving horns, wicked fangs and a slender tongue with a body commonly depicted as spider-like with long singular claws at the end of each appendage. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full gyūki (ushi-oni) or gyūki (ushi-oni) hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, the ability to spin sticky webs, and spit poison. This could potentially be the Devil Fruit of Vice Admiral Onigumo due to his name meaning demon spider.

Neko Neko no Mi,

Model: Byakko

(Cat-Cat Fruit, Model: White Tiger)

The Byakko is a celestial white tiger and one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. Its home is in the Western sky. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full white tiger or white tiger hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, flight, the ability to create metal armor, and control the wind. This could potentially be the Devil Fruit of Kaido’s daughter, Yamato. The Chinese have an interesting idiom about “the tiger and the dragon”. It refers to two spirits so wildly different and yet at the same time similar, mortal enemies intricately linked together by destiny. This connection can be made due to Yamato’s hatred for Kaido even though he is her father. Also, in chapter One Piece 996, Yamato begins to transform during a confrontation with Sasaki, gaining sharp fangs and growling, before being interrupted by Franky.

Uo Uo no Mi,

Model: Gyokuryū

(Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Jade Dragon)

The Japanese name for Yulong, a minor character of the 16th-century novel Journey to the West, or a dragon made from green jade. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full living Jade Dragon or Jade Dragon hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, flight, durable skin made of strong jade scales, the ability to breathe fire, summon pearls of spiritual energy, control of nature, and extraordinary good luck. This could potentially be the Devil Fruit of Admiral Ryokugyu (Green Bull) due to his name being an anagram of Gyokuryū.

Kame Kame no Mi,

Model: Genbu

(Turtle-Turtle Fruit, Model: Black Tortoise)

The Genbu is a celestial tortoise and one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. His home is in the Northern sky. Genbu is described as a tortoise-snake chimera with the snake being the creatures tail. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full Genbu or Genbu hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, a very durable shell, and increased field of vision due to having two functioning heads.

Uma Uma no Mi,

Model: Kirin

(Horse-Horse Fruit, Model: Kirin)

The Japanese name for Qilin, the kirin is a mythical hooved chimerical creature known in East Asian cultures as the ruler of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. His home is the Earth. The kirin is described as colorful chimera wreathed in flame and smoke, with a dragon-like head, scales, horns and antlers, and the body of a powerful horse. The user would gain the ability to transform into a full kirin or kirin hybrid at will. The user would also gain animalistic strength, increased speed, earth manipulation, and the ability to breathe holy fire. Another potential Devil Fruit for Admiral Ryokugyu.

Hopefully I am wrong and Oda does decide to venture into Western mythology for Mythical Zoans as well because there are so many creatures to choose from. It would be nice to see Mythical Zoans such as the Cerberus, Unicorn, Jörmungandr, Pegasus, Fenrir, Sphinx, Griffin, Manticore, Basilisk, etc. Only time will tell.
