The Color Purple (2023) is a musical coming-of-age period drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule (Black Is King) from a screenplay written by Marcus Gardley (The Chi), based on the novel and Broadway musical of the same name. Featuring Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi; it is the second theatrical adaptation of the novel following Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film. The story follows the life-long struggles of an African-American woman named Celie living in the South during the early 1900s.
