We should take this with mountains of salt but the current rumor is that Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, wants Kevin Feige to direct as well as produce the first film in the new Star Wars Trilogy being developed by former Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Sources close to the studio say the trilogy is said to be (very) loosely based on the video game series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, keeping some story elements and characters but mainly incorporating new original characters. News that Feige is developing a new Star Wars movie broke last week in an article by The Hollywood Reporter where they received confirmation from Disney Chief Creative Officer, Alan Horn.
“With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.” – Alan Horn
Laeta Kalogridis is currently working on the script for the first movie, which is said to be akin to Martin Scorsese’s The Departed but in space, based on the overall story notes from Benioff, Weiss and George Lucas. Sources also say that while Feige is excited about the opportunity he has not agreed to direct as he doesn’t know how he will fit it into his increasingly busy schedule. If it does indeed work out for Feige to direct, expect an official announcement along with the film’s title and release date at Star Wars Celebration 2020 in Anaheim, CA.
The first film in the new Star Wars Trilogy is due to arrive in theaters on December 16, 2022.
