Fans have been eagerly awaiting a trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ever since the first images were released last November. Luckily for us, a new trailer dropped earlier this week and gave us many new clues about what to expect from the new film. We finally get to hear Jude Law speak as the young Albus Dumbledore and learn more about his relationship with Newt (Eddie Redmayne). There’s also the return of Jacob Kowalski, played once again by the hilarious Dan Fogler, who looks to have had his memories of the magical world returned after having them erased at the end of the previous film. The trailer also gives viewers quick shots of Tina and Queenie Goldstein, Leta Lestrange, Gellert Grindelwald, Theseus Scamander, and Credence Barebone. But a few eagle-eyed fans noticed some interesting information about Credence’s family history that is also revealed during the trailer.

During a quick scene in the trailer, a mysterious figure is shown looking at a sketch of the Lestrange family tree on a brick wall. The Lestrange family has played a big part in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World with Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) serving as a major villain in the final four Harry Potter films (and books). Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz) is mentioned in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as an old flame of Newt’s who is now engaged to his brother, Theseus. The Lestrange family is a very old and wealthy pure-blood wizarding family, and one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. They are known for having an affinity towards practicing the Dark Arts and believing in the notion of pure-blood supremacy, holding disdain for Muggles, Muggle-borns, blood traitors, and in some cases half-bloods.
Most notably in the family tree, we see the descendants of Corvus Lestrange. This is likely Corvus Lestrange IV because the names of his aunt, Josette Lestrange, and his mother, Eglantine Lestrange, can be seen above his. To the left of Corvus, we see the name Laurena Kama, who is the mother of Leta Lestrange, with Leta’s name right below. It’s also worth noting that their ethnicities are distinguished with Laurena’s face not colored in and Leta Lestrange’s face only half colored in. These two wizards will be the first Black members of the Lestrange family seen on screen. To the right of Corvus, we see the name, Clarice Tremblay, with the name Credence Barebone right below it. This would mean that Credence’s actual surname is Lestrange making Leta his half-sister. The surname Barebone is simply from his adoptive mother Mary Lou. This adds a significant twist to the story for we know that Grindelwald was after Credence and his Obscurial powers in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Maybe once Grindelwald realizes Credence survived the events in New York he will try to use Credence’s family history to get the young wizard to join his dark army.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald aims to take us back to the wizarding world on November 11, 2018.
