Is Danny Ocean Really Dead In ‘Ocean’s 8’?

After 10 years we finally get another chapter in the Ocean’s saga. A new trailer has been released for Ocean’s 8, an upcoming heist comedy film directed by Gary Ross, that is both a sequel and spin-off to Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Trilogy. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and Awkwafina. The story follows Danny Ocean’s estranged sister, Debbie Ocean, as she gathers a crew to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. The trailer is pretty paint-by-numbers, but keen-eyed fans will have noticed something extremely jarring towards the end of it.

Yes, Danny Ocean is dead! As the trailer finishes up we see Debbie enjoying a martini in front of a grave that reads “Danny Ocean; 1961-2018.” This is a major spoiler to place in your first trailer. Matt Damon and Carl Reiner are due to reprise their roles as Linus Caldwell and Saul Bloom from the previous Ocean’s Trilogy in cameo appearances, but many fans were hoping that if the film were a success they would see other characters such as Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan appears in sequels. It’s clearly evident that that studio plans on making this a new trilogy as they titled the film Ocean’s 8 and not Ocean’s 14. Thus, ending the new trilogy at Ocean’s 10 which would be numerically right before Ocean’s 11. This would be aesthetically pleasing to those who wish to have the entire series in collectors-edition.

Perhaps the grave is a red herring placed to mislead audiences about the true fate of Danny and he will actually appear in the film or one of its sequels. Debbie does state in the trailer that she needs a crew of seven people, but this includes herself. James Corden’s character could be the eighth member, but maybe her brother Danny is the true leader of the crew and this is secretly his caper. Hopefully, we get more information when the next trailer comes out, but not too much. The studio should leave some surprises for when the film is released.

Ocean’s 8 is due to be released in the United States on June 8, 2018.
