Building A Franchise: Why We Need ‘The Lego Rick And Morty Movie’

LEGO Rick and Morty

Anybody who’s anybody knows who Rick and Morty are. For those who don’t know, the adventures of Rick and Morty take place throughout the multiverse, which consists of an infinite number of realities. Even though the show’s main focus is on Rick and Morty, the other major storylines include Summer (Morty’s sister), Beth (Morty’s mom) and Jerry (Morty’s dad). These characters travel to other planets and dimensions using either Rick’s portal gun or his flying car. The show was created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon and airs on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block.

The fact that Rick and Morty have access to infinite timelines and realities makes it perfect for The Lego Movie treatment. The film could easily follow Rick and Morty on an adventure into a Lego dimension where they meet many of the ‘Master Builders’ like Emmet and Batman and help them save the day. The characters aren’t strangers to blocky forms either. The Season 3 finale had the characters appear in Minecraft form.

Other great aspects of the show that make it a prime candidate for The Lego Movie treatment are the various easter eggs and fourth wall breaks. The Lego Movies are known for their easter eggs. (There were too many to count in The Lego Batman Movie.) Having Rick engage with the audience in the theater and comment on how low they (Roiland and Harmon) have fallen to be making a Lego Rick and Morty film would be hilarious on many levels. In addition, Roiland and Harmon would surely sneak in some innuendo to keep the parents laughing.

The only possible issue is that all previous films in The Lego Movie franchise have been rated PG. If Warner Bros. were to greenlight The Lego Rick And Morty Movie it would be almost impossible to make it PG without upsetting fans. Since most of the show’s profanity is bleeped out, the same could be done in a movie earning it a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. Many young children go to the movies with their parents anyways, so making this change wouldn’t affect the amount of younger viewers who see the film.

LEGO Portal

The Lego Movie franchise has been going strong with The Lego Ninjago Movie released this September and The Lego Movie Sequel due to be released on February 8, 2019. Only time will tell if Warner Bros. will ever start mining more obscure series for potential Lego Movies. If they do, I hope Rick and Morty is at the top of their list.

Season 3 of Rick and Morty wrapped up this past Sunday.
