Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is an animated supervillain action film directed by Sam Liu, with a script written by Alan Burnett. It is the 31st film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, the 10th installment of the DC Animated Movie Universe, and the first film in that universe to feature Task Force X. Although Batman: Assault on Arkham previously featured Task Force X, that film is set in the Batman: Arkham video game universe. The voice cast includes Christian Slater as Deadshot, Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, and Vanessa Williams as Amanda Waller. The story follows a newly assembled Task Force X, consisting of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Copperhead, Killer Frost and Bronze Tiger, on a mission to find a man named Maxum Steel and retrieve information on the whereabouts of a mysterious card for Amanda Waller. Once again, Sam Liu proves why he is a great director for the DC Universe Animated Original Movies in his 11^th turn at the job. He introduces many characters while giving them just enough screen time to justify their importance to the plot, therefore, nobody feels wasted. He also does a great job at balancing the comedy with the action without sacrificing story. Speaking of story, this film has a great one. While the DC Animated Movie Universe films do take place within the same universe, they rarely connect outside of the Batman-centric films. This film connects to a previous DC Animated Movie Universe film in a major way that creates an interesting twist for one of the villainous characters. Surprisingly, the nature of the mission in this film allows the viewers to see  Task Force X’s thoughts on the afterlife. Whether they believe in Heaven or Hell, most do not believe they will go to the former due to all the things they have done in life. This discussion about the afterlife adds more depth to the team as well as a few other characters in the story. The animation in this film is nice, on par with the animation of the other animated DC films. Robert J. Kral does a great job with the film’s score, hitting similar thematic notes from his previous DC Universe Animated Original Movie, Batman: Assault on Arkham. The voice cast is pretty good with each of the actors delivering a decent performance.  The standout is Billy Brown as Bronze Tiger. His voice is cool, collected, and reserved, while also strong and demanding. He’s the most relatable character out of the group as he is more of an antihero than a villain. Tara Strong is fitting as Harley Quinn considering she has voiced the character many times before in various forms of DC media. The character is once again crazy but fun-spirited. The only exception would be Christian Slater. His natural voice doesn’t seem to fit the character of Deadshot in this film. It’s a tad bit high pitched and should have been lowered a tone or two. I give Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay a Decent 8.6/10. This film is dark, gritty, bloody, and fun with a twist that’s bound to catch many viewers off guard.
