Wow, Steven Soderbergh knows how to make an entertaining heist film! Logan Lucky is easily on par with Soderbergh’s previous heist films: Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, and Ocean’s 13. Logan Lucky is a film about a blue-collar construction worker, Jimmy Logan, who hatches a plan to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca-Cola 600 after being fired for liability reasons. There were many positives about this film. From the start, this film was hilarious. In the theater, I laughed out loud multiple times and I giggled even more at the subtle comedy and pop culture references. The casting was phenomenal. One of the main reasons I wanted to see this film was to find out if Daniel Craig would actually hold a Southern US accent, and he does! You would think he was actually from West Virginia. He proves that he is way more than James Bond as he plays the character of Joe Bang. Also, his scenes with the Logan brothers were some of the best in the film. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are also great as Jimmy and Clyde Logan, respectively. They had great on-screen chemistry and acted like they had spent a lifetime with each other. Watching Jimmy’s expressions as Clyde revisits all the unfortunate events that affected their family over the years was enjoyable. This also added more credence to the title of the film since their family is known for having bad luck. For example, Clyde lost his arm in the Iraq War and Jimmy blew out his knee while playing football. The rest of the cast is a nice addition to the film, as well, and they never break character, save for maybe once. It’s nice to see Katie Holmes acting again, even if it is in a smaller role. Being from the Carolinas, I appreciated that Steven Soderbergh captured the atmosphere of NASCAR so perfectly. There are many Southerners who enjoy watching NASCAR as much as they enjoy watching the NFL. Even though he was poking fun at Southerners in the comedy, I think it was almost spot on. I have a friend who works for NASCAR, so I’m going to have to ask him if the physics of the heist would actually work since the film made the entire situation believable. The only negative that I have about the film is also the only thing that I am sure is not true. The director makes it seem as if Boone County, West Virginia and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina are an hour away from each other. I know for a fact that this is not the case, but it is the only nitpick that I have with the film. I give Lucky Logan an Excellent 9.5/10. I enjoyed this film for what it was, which is a hillbilly version of Hell or High Water. Also, watch out for the cameos from Seth MacFarlane, Sebastian Stan, and Hilary Swank because they are equally great!
