“My Spidey Sense is tingling” is as classic to the character of Spider-Man as ” With great power comes great responsibility”. The Spider-Sense has been one of the main abilities in every iteration of the web-slinger in print, television, and film. The Spider-Sense alerts Spider-Man to incoming danger even if he can’t see it. Only very few characters, such as Venom and Scorpion, have been able to get past this early warning system undetected. However, this ability was indeed left out of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts explained why they opted to leave out the Spider Sense in this film.
“I feel like we have seen a lot of Spider Sense in the previous films, so we didn’t really lean into that as hard as they have in the previous films. But I do think it is a really interesting thing to explore.”
I did get to see an advanced screening of the film last week and didn’t notice his lack of the ability in the movie until afterwards, but thought nothing of it. I assumed they thought they would focus on his technologically advanced suit, which is pretty darn amazing.
However, I wouldn’t be concerned as we do know that Spider-Man does indeed have the power in the MCU. We saw him use it in Captain America: Civil War when he’s first introduced to Ant-Man and when fighting against The Winter Soldier and Falcon. At 1:30:36 we see that Spider-Man begins to notice something isn’t right about Cap’s shield. Next we see Ant-Man grow and kick Spider-Man in the jaw. Then at 1:32:48 into the movie we see Spider-Man’s eyes enlarge as he realizes something is coming. Then we find out that The Winter Soldier threw a sign at him, which Peter easily dodges and sends flying right back at him! Check out the stills below.
